This is very true. We are generally paid more than we would be if we were just a private-sector employee. The reason for this is a couple of things. One is that private-sector employees are more likely to receive promotions and pay raises. Not to mention, they are much more likely to get to work in the heat of the summer.
However, the other reason is that there are government jobs that pay less than private-sector jobs. For many years, New Jersey’s police department was one of only two in the country to pay the minimum wage. But as of a few years ago, New Jersey’s police department is now one of the three lowest-paid. The reason for this seems to lie with the fact that, in the last 40 years, the police department has been underfunded for the last two.
A lot of people in New Jersey are worried about a budget crisis. The recent budget cuts are a big contributor to this. The budget cuts have caused the police to pay below the minimum wage for several years and have even caused the department to be forced to hire part-time cops. The reason for this is that over the last ten years the department has been understaffed and underfunded. It has also caused the department to lose many of its most valuable officers to other jobs.
The reasons for the reduction in funding for the local police department are two-fold. First, the budget crisis has caused the department to shed some officers, especially those with long arrest records. Also, a lot of the officers who were laid off are now laid off due to budget issues, or are in a “layoff” program. And in some cases, they are no longer willing to accept a higher salary and are opting for a lower one.
The city is currently in a time crunch, and there’s no room to absorb all of the police officers who have been laid off. So when the police department has a budget crisis, they have to make cuts.
According to the city payroll website, the average police officer salary in New Jersey is $51,000. As I’ve been writing about in previous blogs, this is a bit higher than the national average. New Jersey ranks 13th in the nation for police salaries. While you can’t always get a police officer salary right for a specific job, the best way to get a feel is to look at the average salary of all police officers in a particular area.
In New Jersey you can find the average police officer salary by searching for “police officer salary New Jersey” on the city payroll website. This search brings up one of the best lists of police salaries Ive ever seen. The data appears in the form of salary ranges for different job classifications across New Jersey, with the highest and lowest paying classifications listed right next to each other.
The data above is pretty extensive and is useful to know for any sort of project you might be working on. I’ll let the police salary in nj data speak for itself. In the article linked above, there is also a list of other sites that collect and display police salaries in the state of New Jersey. I’m not sure if they are affiliated with the police department or not, but I was able to find them.
All of these salary data are in the millions of dollars, and that’s just New Jersey. I also found a list of police departments in New England, New York, New England, and Washington DC. I could go on and on. I might even link to the one in New York City.
This salary data is interesting because it shows how much salaries are going up in certain departments across the country. For example, in the city of New York police department, salaries for a detective are 4.31 million dollars. Now that is a lot of money. But also, the police department is making a lot of money on overtime. According to the article, the average overtime pay in the city is over 30 million dollars per year.
