I am a proud member of the Philadelphia Police Department. I have been working as a police officer for over ten years now. I have been in the field for over twenty plus. I have been involved in the field for over seventeen years and have been working as a police officer since November of ’09. I am a graduate of and a member of the Philadelphia Police Academy.
I was recently contacted by the Philadelphia Police Department to be their candidate for an officer position. I asked if I would be able to attend the training and I was told in no uncertain terms that I would not be allowed to attend. I have asked this same question of many of my colleagues and have been told the same thing. The training is a four hour course and is extremely well attended. I am a member of the Philadelphia Police Department and I am not allowed to attend this training.
I have been told if I attend the training that I will not be allowed to attend the actual job application process. I have spoken to several other police officers and they have told me that the same thing is said if you attend. This seems very odd because if you are going to apply for a police job, you are going to want to be a good candidate. I’m not saying it is right or wrong, I am saying I have been told I will not be allowed to attend.
Philadelphians are not permitted to apply for law enforcement jobs, but we aren’t the only ones with this problem. The police are required to complete an online application process, and the same thing is happening with the Philly Fire Department. I have contacted a number of firefighters and asked if they were allowed to attend. They told me that they were not, and that I shouldn’t have asked.
I also contacted the Philadelphia Police and asked if they were allowed to attend. They told me that they were not, and that I shouldnt have asked.
The Philadelphia Police Department is not allowed to recruit from their own ranks. The application process in itself is controversial. It has been called the first application system that has a lot of problems in it, including the fact that it makes applicants feel like they must conform to the system. It also has the effect of making police officers feel like they cant do their job unless they have the approval of the department. I have contacted a number of officers and asked.
It seems like this is the only way in which officers can get involved in the police force at all. Officers get recruited through the civil service system. It’s not a particularly good system, but it does have some advantages. The civil service system allows officers to get involved where they have no power of arrest, but it also has the effect of making police not feel like they are in control of their actions.
It’s also a system that allows officers to become completely disconnected from the day-to-day workings of the department. For instance, while they are on the job they are allowed to have a sabbatical, only being allowed to leave for a few days at a time, and also not to have to report to work. It is assumed that these officers will have a better chance of being promoted quickly if they are making more money while they are off the job.
The problem with this is that it makes it harder for officers to motivate themselves to do their jobs. When officers are given a sabbatical to leave for a few days, the likelihood of them staying is much higher. In addition, it makes officers more likely to leave their current careers and instead start a career as a private detective or a SWAT team.
This is just about more evidence that the job of policing isn’t making officers any more likely to stay in the profession.
